NSW: Seventh person charged with murder over truckie's death

NSW: Seventh person charged with murder over truckie's death

SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - A seventh person has been charged over the death of truck driver
Bob Knight, killed by a stray bullet as he drove along a Sydney road last year.

Almost 10 months after the shooting, police earlier on Wednesday charged six people
- four men and two youths - with Mr Knight's murder.

Mr Knight, 66, from McGregor in the ACT, was killed by a stray bullet as he drove his
truck along Milperra Road in Sydney's southwest about 10.40pm (AEST) on June 25.

An additional 17-year-old youth was charged on Wednesday after turning himself in to
Campsie police station just after noon (AEST), police said in a statement.

He was charged with murder and affray and was refused bail to appear at Parramatta
Children's Court on Thursday.

Detective Inspector Pamela Young says police believe Mr Knight died as a result of
a planned shootout between warring families in the car park of a suburban KFC outlet.

"The allegation is that they met at the KFC car park to fight each other, we allege
to fire shots at each other, (and) a stray bullet has left the KFC car park and travelled
so far that it did hit Bob Knight as he was driving his truck," she told reporters earlier
on Wednesday.

Two men arrested at Greenacre on Tuesday night - Mustafa Mariam, 32, and Tarek Elvadar,
25 - faced Burwood Local Court on Wednesday charged with Mr Knight's murder and a charge
of affray.

Neither applied for bail and it was formally refused.

The others charged are expected to face Bankstown Local Court and Parramatta Children's
Court later on Wednesday.

Prior to the 17-year-old's arrest, Insp Young said three more people were expected
to be charged with Mr Knight's murder.

Vic: DNA technologies not fail-safe - Brumby

MELBOURNE, Dec 8 AAP - A DNA bungle that saw a Melbourne man wrongly convicted of rape
is inappropriate but forensic technologies are not fail-safe, Victorian Premier John Brumby
says.

Farah Jama, 22, was freed on Monday when his rape conviction was quashed after a DNA
sample was contaminated.

He had spent 15 months in jail but always professed his innocence.

Mr Brumby said he and Attorney-General Rob Hulls were seeking advice on the issue but
ruled out the need for a broader review of DNA cases.

"I wouldn't say that at this stage. I think it would be too early to jump to those
conclusions," Mr Brumby told reporters on Tuesday.

"Obviously in a case like this it's completely inappropriate that he's been wrongly
in jail and ... the state will look at appropriate options."

Mr Brumby said he had not received advice on whether Mr Jama should be compensated
and it was a complex legal matter.

He said DNA was an "outstanding" technology that enabled more people to be brought
to justice but it was a serious matter when it failed.

However, it was not dissimilar to problems historically experienced with finger printing
technology.

"You will never get 100 per cent absolute certainty with any technology that you use
but the objective has to be to get to as close as possible.

"The advice I've got is that the overall reliability of the system is good but nevertheless
it's a matter of serious concern whenever there's an error that's occurred because it
means that there's a miscarriage of justice."

HOBART, April 30 AAP - Australia will avoid the swine flu problems facing other countries,
Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett says.

"And I'm confident that we will avoid the problems that other countries will experience."

Australia's pandemic preparedness plan in response to the global swine flu outbreak

Fed: Nations' representatives join Anzac wreathlaying

Ed: Reissuing to clarify Garrett is Labor spokesman (par 2)

SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Representatives of 10 nations have joined Australian dignitaries
in an Anzac Day wreath laying ceremony at Sydney's Martin Place.

Consul generals from New Zealand, Britain, the United States, India, Korea, Malta,
the Netherlands, Philippines, Solomon Islands and East Timor placed wreaths at the Cenotaph
in morning drizzle alongside federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan, Labor federal
environment spokesman Peter Garrett, state MPs and RSL representatives.

Mr Garrett said the Anzac commemoration was a time to remember when some essential
strands of Australia's national identity were woven.

"To bring other nations' representatives here as well for a significant but dignified
laying of wreaths, I think, enlarges that experience for those who represent other countries
here and confirms for us the significance of the day," Mr Garrett told AAP.

NSW RSL president Don Rowe said he was pleased with the turnout in today's wet weather.

"It certainly hasn't dampened their spirits," Mr Rowe said.

"We've seen people, obviously, making that effort to go to bed early and get up this morning."

World war II veteran Harold Low, 85, first attended the wreath laying ceremony at Martin
Place in 1929 as seven-year-old.

Today, he returned to commemorate his late father who served in France during World
War I and to remember his mates who did not make it back from Papua New Guinea in 1943.

"I come each year and my father used to bring me down as a kid from the Illawarra," Mr Row said.

As a young man he was in the battle for Shaggy Ridge in Papua New Guinea.

"Our assault on Shaggy Ridge freed the valley of all the Japanese and they retreated
way along the coast of PNG," he said.

The Sydney Anzac Day march from Martin Place, down George Street, to Hyde Park is now under way.

Fed: Downer virtually rules out troops for Lebanon

CANBERRA, Aug 17 AAP - Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has all but ruled out sending
troops to join a peacekeeping force bound for southern Lebanon.

The United Nations Security Council last week adopted a resolution calling for a truce
and authorising up to 13,000 troops to augment its existing 2,000-strong UNIFIL force
now in Lebanon.

The United States has urged Australia to be part of the new mission, and the Howard
government has previously said it would consider the request.

Mr Downer has previously said Australia would make only a small contribution to the
force if it made any contribution at all but he went a step further today.

"We do have a very small number of people already in UNIFIL and in the truce supervision
organisation there as well, but I think in total it's around 12," he told ABC Radio.

"I think it's highly unlikely we'll send any more."

Mr Downer said Australia's military was not overstretched by missions in Iraq, Afghanistan,
East Timor and the Solomon Islands, but the defence force was "significantly deployed".

"We wouldn't want to put them in a position where they were too stretched," he said.

"That's obviously one consideration, to make sure that we pace ourselves and we can
do all the jobs we are doing effectively without overreaching."

He predicted a long debate over the peacekeeping force's mandate.

A sticking point could be whether UNIFIL should disarm Hizbollah guerrillas who fought
an Israeli onslaught for 34 days until a truce took hold on Monday.

"On my reading of the Security Council resolution 1701, it won't be disarming Hizbollah
and if that is the case I think it could be a difficult situation for UNIFIL," Mr Downer
said.

"That's not the reason that we won't participate in it, but I think it's unlikely we'll
be able to participate because we won't have the right sort of capability to really give
it additional strength.

"Any contribution we would make would simply be totemic and we may as well let others
do the job."

UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, was created in 1978 to confirm
Israel's withdrawal from its neighbour and restore security.

ArialPhone Corp. Selects Ultralife Polymer Battery To Power New Voice-Enabled, Wireless Communications Device.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

VERNON HILLS, ILL.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2001

Ultralife Polymer Rechargeable Battery Achieves ArialPhone's

Requirements for High Capacity in a Sleek, Lightweight Design

ArialPhone(TM) Corp., a Vernon Hills, Ill. provider of wireless telephone communications devices and voice-enabling software, today announced the selection of Ultralife Batteries Inc. (Nasdaq:ULBI) as the battery supplier for ArialPhone, a new voice-activated wireless communications product that the company will release next month.

Ultralife Batteries, based in Newark, N.Y., is engaged in a long-term contract that involves the design and manufacture of a custom, polymer rechargeable battery for ArialPhone. This battery will be used to power the one-ounce ArialPhone earset, which fits comfortably over the user's ear to provide a convenient, hands-free approach to phone calling.

"Ultralife Polymer(TM) enables companies such as ArialPhone Corp. to introduce innovative new wireless technologies in formats and performance levels otherwise unattainable," said Eric Dix, vice president and general manager of Ultralife Batteries. "We have worked closely with ArialPhone to develop and produce a custom polymer battery that delivers high capacity in their very compact package. Even including our battery, the entire earset weighs just over an ounce -- an achievement that is sure to contribute to the success of this very innovative telephone communications product."

Top-Quality Communications for "Free Agents"

ArialPhone is designed to make phone calling more efficient for busy consumers, such as small office/home office professionals or "free agents" who rely heavily on telecommunications. The prime advantage ArialPhone offers over other wireless products is its capability to simultaneously access both the telephone and personal computer through a wearable, hands-free earset, which is controlled entirely by voice commands. The device delivers top-quality, digital communications within a 150-foot range -- even through walls. Productivity and efficiency gains are realized because the user is able to perform automated contact management functions, such as voice dialing by name, while moving about the home or office.

Two-Battery Base Station Design Provides Unlimited "Talk Time"

In addition to the battery-operated earset, the ArialPhone system also includes a base station and voice-enabling software. The base station design is the key behind ArialPhone's ability to offer unlimited "talk time" to customers: it features two charging slots for two separate batteries, which means there will always be a fully charged battery available for the earset. If the battery runs low during a phone conversation, the earset will generate an alert. The phone connection will be held while the user replaces the battery in a simple exchange process that takes only seconds.

Each Ultralife Polymer battery provides a "talk time" of two to three hours, with a recharge time of approximately two hours and a standby time of four to five days. Reliability is assured, with protective circuitry designed into the batteries as part of further customization efforts by Ultralife.

"As one of the first companies to have successfully commercialized polymer, Ultralife is truly at the forefront of battery technology," said Jim Alland, CEO and co-founder of ArialPhone Corp. "By leveraging this emerging technology through our valuable partnership with Ultralife, we have been able to produce a telephony product that delivers a whole new level of convenience and productivity to the marketplace."

Pimco Stays Defensive Despite Optimism.

Although Ben Trosky, managing director and portfolio manager at Newport Beach , Calif.-based Pimco believes the high yield market finally offers some good value, his top down-oriented firm is nonetheless defensive and will continue on that track going forward.

Last year, Pimco's High Yield Fund outperformed the Lipper Index by 1.88%. And in the last three years, while the Lipper Index average was 2.56%, Pimco's was at 5.08% after fees and expenses.

The top down process sets a backdrop for the risk environment of the market, Trosky said. For example, during periods where Pimco is less sanguine towards economic process, or sees exogenous risk factors as having a higher probability of impacting the marketplace, the portfolio is usually adjusted to a more conservative posture than under normal circumstances. And although the high yield fund buys the most aggressive B3/B-minus rated credits, it is usually managed to a double-B average credit quality. It can and frequently does buy single-B rated credits, but is restricted from buying triple-C rated securities by prospectus.

"The triple-C sector alone represents anywhere from one- to eight percent of the high yield market, depending on the benchmark chosen. The high yield market and aggregate is closer to the single-B average quality. If the market overall is mostly single-B, we're definitely higher than average," Trosky said.

But Pimco is by no means a closet indexer, Trosky said. There are entire sectors the fund excludes from its portfolios because of poor risk characteristics. For example, Trosky does not hold retail credits because, he said, consumer spending has outpaced income for a long time and consumer debt levels too have risen sharply. And the Internet has also impacted the retailing sector. "We cannot find any credits that are positioned to offset those trends, so we don't own retail credits in the portfolio," Trosky said.

His top five industry exposures include weightings of 7.9% in cable, 11.1% in telecom, 7.6% in finance companies, 4.1% in chemical and 3.7% in publishing. Trosky declined to disclose specific names held in his portfolio.

Because Pimco is underweighted in the telecom sector, the fund's performance year-to-date is lagging in the overall universe of high yield. Still, this will not meaningfully change the fund's investment strategy, Trosky said.

"A lot of the bonds issued in telecoms are pseudo-capital equity ventures and poor collateral values," said David Hinman, senior vice president and manager of Pimco high yield products, who works with Trosky. "There is also rapid product obsolescence." He also noted that it is Pimco's policy to have a higher quality bent on double-B bonds. "We feel we can take less risk than our competitors and produce better performance."

Trosky also avoids heavy cyclicals such as steel. "The risk returns are fairly unattractive," he said. And he maintains the same policy on technology, which he said he does not own. "The idea of making a 10-year sub loan to a company that has an 18-24 month product cycle strikes us as a mismatch between assets and liabilities and poor risk return tradeoffs."

He did say, however, that about 1.5% of the fund is in emerging markets. Smaller positions include investments in Japanese banks, and roughly 3% in European credits. "We have a broadly diversified portfolio with relatively stable demand characteristics and identifiable cash flow profiles that should be resistant to economic downturns," he said.

As for the next 12 months, Trosky sees bond issues yielding between 8% and 10%, which, he says, may compare favorably to equities in the years going forward. In the meantime, He is focusing investments in seven-year notes whenever possible versus those with 10-year maturity dates. "So, it's a pretty conservative portfolio," he said.

Trosky has spent roughly 20 years in investment management and joined Pimco in 1990 after working as analyst and then co-manager of high yield mutual funds at Merrill Lynch Asset Management for four years.

Of Pimco's roughly $195 billion in fixed income assets, the fund has about $9.5 billion dedicated to high yield in specialty mandates.

LAS VEGAS MAN SENTENCED TO 37 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SOLICITING SEX FROM MINOR OVER INTERNET.

LAS VEGAS -- The following information was released by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada:

A local man has been sentenced to 37 years in federal prison for soliciting sex over the Internet from a person he thought was a minor, announced Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

Darryl Owen Walizer, 43, of Las Vegas, was sentenced on Friday, June 10, 2011, by U.S. District Judge Philip M. Pro to 444 months in prison and lifetime supervised release. Walizer was convicted of coercion and enticement of a minor and commission of a felony sex offense by an individual required to register as a sex offender. Judge Pro sentenced Walizer to 324 months on the first count and 120 months, consecutive, on the second count. Federal law states that a person convicted of the repeat sex offender count must serve 10 years in prison consecutive to the other sentence. This was the first time that a defendant in Nevada had been charged and convicted of this relatively new law passed in 2006. Walizer has two prior convictions for solicitation of a juvenile in Virginia and importuning in Ohio.

"As this case demonstrates, repeat sex offenders face much stricter penalties under new federal laws," said U.S. Attorney Bogden. "The Department of Justice works with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate, track down, and prosecute these dangerous individuals."

In March 2010, ICE authorities in Las Vegas received information from the Garland, Texas Police Department that one of their detectives who was acting in an undercover capacity as a 14-year-old female, had been contacted online by Walizer in February 2010 and solicited for sex. Walizer had asked the girl/undercover agent about her level of sexual experience, and if she was looking for an older guy to teach her about sex. In continued online conversations, Walizer's statements became more sexually graphic, and he told the girl he loved her and that she was his girlfriend, and began speaking about engaging in sexual acts with her. The girl told Walizer she was going to Las Vegas to see an uncle. ICE agents arrested Walizer at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on March 12, 2010, where the girls's plane was supposed to arrive.

"This sentence should serve as a sobering warning about the serious consequences facing those who sexually exploit underage victims," said Michael Harris, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Las Vegas. "The lengthy sentence should also be reassuring for the community because it ensures this predator will no longer be at liberty to prey on young people and put our children at risk."

The case was investigated by ICE HSI and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Nancy J. Koppe and Cristina Silva.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys' Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) of the U.S. Department of Justice, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals, who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. AVG CEO Calls for Tax Credit on Internet Security Tools.

Company launches Twitter campaign in response to Maine ruling on consumer and business liability in high-profile hacker theft

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- AVG Technologies CEO JR Smith today called the Maine US District Court's ruling that Ocean Bank is not liable for $300,000 stolen by hackers from Patco Construction Company's online banking profile, a "landmark decision" to which consumers and small businesses pay close attention. The judge asserted it was Patco's responsibility to protect account credentials - namely via use of internet security and identity protection tools. Smith believes the decision represents a critical shift in liability of the industry's willingness to absorb the skyrocketing costs of identity theft and fraud via the World Wide Web. With more than 110 million customers around the globe, AVG is one of the leading providers of internet and mobile security software. The company has been on the forefront of protecting consumers and small businesses from organized crime on the internet for more than a decade.

"AVG has long predicted that banks and retailers would reach a tipping point where they could no longer fully cover losses that are incurred as a result of small businesses and consumers not taking responsibility for securing their personal information," said Smith. "More than two years ago AVG began asking governments to consider tax incentives for consumers and small businesses as a way of helping them understand their role in securing the World Wide Web. We believe the money ultimately saved by thwarting online attacks could not only offset, but supersede the revenues lost in a tax incentive."

Smith would not be surprised if the Maine decision is soon joined by others that take the side of the retailer and banks who have long covered for their customers' inattention to security threats. According to Smith, a recent US study carried out by AVG Technologies and the Ponemon Institute revealed very disconcerting trends relating to consumer practices in the mobile space - trends that banks, governments and retailers will probably no longer ignore.

* 66 percent of respondents store significant data on their phones

* 29 percent store debit and credit card information

* 38 percent use their phone to make payments

* 89 percent of respondents were unaware that smartphone applications can transmit confidential payment information such as credit card details without the user's knowledge or consent

* 91 percent of respondents were unaware that financial applications for smartphones can be infected with malware designed to steal credit card numbers and online banking credentials, while nearly a third (29 percent) report already storing credit and debit card information on their devices and 35 percent report storing "confidential" work-related documents as well

* Less than half of consumers use keypad locks or passwords to secure their smartphones and only 10 percent of consumers say they turn off Bluetooth "discoverable" status on their smartphone when not in use

* 90 percent do NOT turn off Bluetooth discoverability

* Less than 50 percent use key pad locks and 71 percent have never even considered installing AV software

Furthermore, AVG's recent SMB landscape report found that one in seven small businesses have no security software (rising to one in four for single-employee businesses in the US) - and less than half are aware of the real and tangible threats posed by Internet based attacks. AVG also found that 77 percent of firms recognise that a security breach could have a significant impact on their business and 83 percent feel that having the right level of protection is critical to their business. Yet less than half have a clear security policy in place.

"Banks and retailers are going to expect small businesses and consumers to meet them halfway when it comes to security," said Smith. "AVG believes that tax incentives for small businesses and consumers are important steps in the process of helping them understand they are a critical link in the security chain. Because consumers and small businesses really do not have a choice when it comes to doing business in the digital world, and as business and government are completely dependent on the worldwide web to conduct commerce, it is important they have tax incentives to make the right security investments."

For people who wish to show their support for the government to provide tax incentives for consumers who utilize security software and tools to protect their online activities, AVG is initiating a viral effort on Twitter where consumers can get involved. Please tweet the following: @avgfree The US government needs to provide tax incentives to help consumers utilize security software #SecurityCredit Please retweet . The volume of tweets will send an important message to the decision makers who can enact this important decision to protect consumers.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS TO BRING HIGH-SPEED FIBER INTERNET SERVICE TO PIONEER SQUARE REMOVES BARRIERS TO NEXT GENERATION OF FIBER BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY.

SEATTLE, WA -- The following information was released by the city of Seattle:

Mayor Mike McGinn joined former mayor Charles Royer, Department of Information Technology Director Bill Schrier and Pioneer Square business owner Jeff Strain today to announce the next step in the City's effort to bring high-speed fiber internet to Pioneer Square. The City is publishing a Request for Proposals for Internet service providers to offer fiber optic-based broadband service in Pioneer Square. This would allow businesses to get much more bandwidth than is available to them today, at speeds up to 100 times faster than is currently available.

"Businesses have told us the internet service available to them in Pioneer Square is 'barely adequate,'" said McGinn. "Today we are one step closer to bringing them the extremely fast internet service they need to compete in the global economy."

McGinn announced in his State of the City address in February that Seattle City Light and the Department of Information Technology would lay conduit under four blocks of First Avenue in Pioneer Square as part of an existing project. The conduit enables fiber optic cable to be pulled through it, allowing nearby businesses to connect to high-speed fiber broadband internet service.

"This is something we have needed and is coming at the right time, just as new economy firms are filling up Pioneer Square office space" said former mayor Charles Royer.

Under the terms of today's RFP, internet service providers will be able to pull fiber through the City's conduit and serve neighboring buildings. Fiber optic cable has much higher bandwidth than most of the existing infrastructure, and can handle both extremely high download and upload speeds. Copper and coaxial cable physically limit the amount of data-and business-that can travel over them.

"What we are able to get in Pioneer Square right now is about half the speed of what you'd be able to get in your home," said Jeff Strain, founder of Undead Labs, a game development company. "Fiber internet is essential in order for us to keep our company here."

The City expects 2 to 3 internet service providers to submit proposals. If none do, then the City will take steps to directly make service available. McGinn said the City hopes fiber broadband service will be available to customers along First Avenue by the end of September.

Just browsing or ready to buy, there's an app.(FRIDAY HOME GUIDE)

Byline: Michele Lerner, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The days when homebuyers flipped through a magazine of homes for sale, peering at a small black-and-white photo to see whether a property appealed to them, are long gone.

Today's buyers have the option of viewing hundreds of home photos online or on their smartphones and have countless pieces of information at their fingertips before they even call a Realtor or visit a home in person.

The 2010 National Association of Realtors' Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers showed that 89 percent of homebuyers searched online for a home, while fewer than 1 percent used a home book or magazine. Although most buyers start their search online, 85 percent of those who used the Internet purchased their home through a real estate agent.

One of the newest trends for homebuyers is the use of mobile applications to find homes and gather information about properties and neighborhoods.

Century 21 recently introduced an app for all smartphone platforms that links information to the Century21.com website. Locally, Century 21 New Millennium's free downloadable app enables buyers to search for all available properties in the Washington area.

The mobile website is more simplistic than the usual website, so when you access it from a mobile phone, it is easier to read, says Todd Hetherington, CEO of Century 21 New Millennium. "Buyers can search by address, by county, by ZIP code and even by state for information.

The mobile app has all the information available on the regular website, such as the price, the number of bedrooms and baths, pictures and sometimes even pictures of the community. If the property is in a homeowners association, the site will share the fees and what amenities are included in the fees.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offers the Coldwell Banker real estate app for the iPad, an application potential buyers can download for free.

The iPad app is interactive because buyers want to do more than just search for homes, says Darrin Friedman, branch vice president of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage's Chevy Chase office in the District. The way we communicate with buyers is important, so we deliver more content that matters to them, including access to videos via the iTunes channel. There are videos of homes, but also videos for things like 'how to get your garden started in the spring.'"

The Coldwell Banker app for the iPad enables buyers to search for homes, real estate agents and offices; view videos of listings, agents, offices and communities; view integrated data on local amenities; contact an agent or office directly from the iPad; share listings on multiple social media sites; and create a favorites section for saving searches, listings, agents, offices and videos.

The application can be used by people who are not necessarily tech-savvy, so even someone who just bought an iPad can use it, Mr. Friedman says. Mobility is key in this business, because clients want information at their fingertips no matter where they are.

Mr. Friedman says customers without an iPad can access the same information on the ColdwellBanker.com website using a computer or smartphone.

The main value is to educate clients and give them information that is useful, whether that is about a neighborhood they didn't know existed or a specific property or even gardening, Mr. Friedman says.

Coldwell Banker also has introduced a real estate game similar to Sim City for iAd for iPad, accessible through banner ads on various sites on the iPad.

We are the first to do this, which allows people to click on an iAd banner and create a city or town of their dreams based on different categories such as travel, shopping, education, restaurants and active living, then use a sliding scale to find neighborhoods and properties that meet their criteria, Mr. Friedman says.

In addition to mobile applications, buyers in the Washington area can take advantage of QR, or quick response, codes on property signs and on real estate agents' websites and business cards.

QR codes are prevalent in Europe and Asia and recently have been popular in our area, Mr. Hetherington says. Buyers can download a QR reader, then take a picture of the house and instantly get information on the property, including the price, number of bedrooms and baths, everything you would find on a website. Buyers can also use a text code that they can find on the yard sign to get the same information if they haven't downloaded the QR application.

QR codes also can be used on a computer to gain instant access to information. The codes also can be used to contact the listing agent for the property.

One of the great things about the ease of access to information directly by buyers is that they can be anonymous, Mr. Friedman says. NAR says that it takes about a nine-month incubation period while buyers do research before they call a Realtor, so QR codes and mobile apps are great for people who are just getting started.

Buyers ready to work with an agent may want to find one who offers SpatialMatch, a new tool developed by Home Junction. SpatialMatch, a search-engine application that can be embedded in a real estate agent's or broker's website, offers a wide range of information to buyers.

Consumers can see everything they want in one spot through our lifestyle search engine, which gathers information from 104 different databases, says Grant Gould, co-founder of Home Junction. We integrate data on things like local amenities, so people can immediately check by address or ZIP code where they would find coffee shops, restaurants, hair salons, schools, everything they need in terms of local amenities. The site also includes demographic information so people can find out if the area has families with children or a high owner-occupancy rate.

Mr. Gould says 19 real estate agents in the Washington area have SpatialMatch on their websites.

The technology makes this simple, so non-tech-savvy people can use it, Mr. Gould says. Everything is map-based, with different filtering mechanisms that make it simple to click on different pieces of information.

The company offers a version of SpatialMatch that includes MLS listings that are updated every hour, so agents and their clients will find complete information on neighborhoods, including property records and school district information.

Hinrich goes gun-shy again as Bulls must address some issues.

Byline: Rick Morrissey

CHICAGO _ Whatever victory smells like, the Detroit Pistons smelled it in the fourth quarter Thursday night. And the Bulls? Well, they seemed to be holding their noses.

That might seem unduly harsh after the Bulls charged back from a 3-0 deficit to make a best-of-seven series an actual series. It's not meant to be. It's meant to point out that when it comes to success, the Pistons embrace it, and the Bulls don't know quite what to make of the concept yet.

So this one ended the way it probably should have, with Detroit beating the Bulls, 95-85, and heading for the Eastern Conference finals.

What separates the teams right now, besides talent, is the Pistons' understanding of what it takes to win. They look the part of champions.

"We came up against a team that is experienced and (is) kind of used to this," Bulls forward Luol Deng said.

You can't quantify these things. A scoreboard or a stat sheet doesn't do justice to what Detroit was able to do in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

The Pistons seemed to get everything when it mattered, whether it was rebounds, loose balls or defensive stops. If somebody kept score of, say, free refrigerator magnets, the Pistons would have gotten most of those too.

And the Bulls did a slow, painful fade.

P.J. Brown was called for traveling in the fourth quarter, a very human mistake for a guy who looked incapable of sin in the first half. Deng shot an air ball. Ben Wallace couldn't hit a free throw when it mattered. Fear the Throw.

That's how it was. Call it what you want, but it looked as if the Bulls shied away from all that goes with this big a challenge.

Kirk Hinrich's shot went missing again, and he reverted back to the Hinrich of the first three games, the one who didn't seem to want the ball down the stretch. That can happen when you shoot 3-for-13, as he did Thursday.

It left a team that had few offensive options in the first place with one fewer. Whenever Hinrich drove to the basket in the fourth, the Pistons knew at least one thing: He wasn't going to shoot. And unless Wallace was going to discover some long-lost offensive skills, the Bulls were in trouble.

The P.J. Brown who showed up in the first half looked suspiciously like a go-to guy. His season high this season was 19 points, twice. He had 20 at halftime. This had the possibility of being either very good or very bad for the Bulls. Good, in that anytime someone plays well, it's a positive. Bad, in that if P.J. Brown is your sole means of offensive support, you could be in big trouble.

They were in big trouble in the second half, when Brown didn't score and Detroit outscored the Bulls by 15.

Brown being on pace for 40 points was strange. So was the fact that the referees failed to put about 10 seconds back on the clock in the second quarter after it had run for a while after a whistle. Too bad it didn't matter for the Bulls.

What wasn't strange was Rasheed Wallace's continuing cage match with himself. When he was called for a foul and then traveling in the fourth quarter, there seemed to be a pretty good chance he was going to spontaneously combust right there on the United Center floor. He finally did a few minutes later, getting a technical after some histrionics after a foul on Hinrich.

"Y'all see what was happening," Wallace said afterward. Well, no.

Wallace, who gets angry if a referee even thinks about touching a whistle, is an idiot. But he's an idiot who's advancing to the Eastern Conference finals. And that's really all that matters.

The first half was how it was supposed to be all along. These were two teams so much in each other's faces that there were no secrets about whose pregame meal involved garlic.

It wouldn't be a blowout victory or loss. There wouldn't be a huge lead blown. It was just a playoff basketball game, with all the emotion and tightness of one. That's how it looked to be shaping up.

And then it went away.

Again, too bad. The goal for the Bulls was the conference finals. It was a realistic goal at the start of the season. By the end of it, it was apparent they needed some help.

There is a tomorrow for the Bulls. It just doesn't involve basketball. It involves some questions for general manager John Paxson. Is this team as constituted good enough to advance next year? What is Hinrich, a shooter or a point guard? Do the Bulls need another scorer?

The answers are no, who knows and yes.

There's suddenly a lot of time to address them.

NEW SOFTWARE BEATS TELEPHONE TAPPING.(BUSINESS)

SAN JOSE, Calif. Three computer engineers worried about government intrusion are offering software over the Internet that they say turns personal computers into telephones that can't be tapped.

The free Nautilus program is intended to circumvent the Clipper chip and other measures that law enforcement says it needs to catch criminals as more and more communication takes place through digital technology.

``I think the government has gone way over the edge in invading privacy and trying to enforce wartime security on a peacetime population. We're trying to give the general public the idea they can do something about it,'' said Pat Mullarky, a Bellevue, Wash. hardware engineer and one of Nautilus' developers.

Nautilus can be used by any two people with IBM-type PCs having high-speed modems, Sound Blaster cards and Internet access.

With Nautilus, the participants decide on a secret phrase used to encode their conversation over standard phone lines, making it virtually impossible for anyone without the key to decode it.

The program would thwart the Clipper chip, which the Clinton administration advocates as a standard for computers and telecommunications equipment. The chip encodes communications, making them secure. But the government would have the key to the code to allow court-allowed government surveillance.

Civil libertarians and most of the computer industry oppose the Clipper chip. Many also oppose a bill Congress passed last fall to spend $500 million over three years to install equipment in telephone and cellular networks to permit legal wiretaps.

Spokesmen for the FBI in Washington and San Francisco said Friday they weren't familiar with the Nautilus program and had no immediate comment.

But the bureau has said that measures like Clipper and the telephone bill are necessary for effective law enforcement.

``The FBI had been thwarted in important cases by sophisticated digital technologies already installed on some telephone networks,'' FBI Director Louis Freeh said when the Senate passed the telephone bill last fall.

``We would have been completely prevented in a very short time from carrying out any court-approved wiretapping'' without the bill, Freeh said.

Mullarky developed Nautilus with two software engineers, Paul Rubin of Milpitas, Calif., and Bill Dorsey of Los Altos, Calif. It has been availableon the Internet since Wednesday.

Nautilus can be found on the Internet through the sci.crypt newsgroup.

EBAY SQUARES OFF WITH CHINA E-COMMERCE FIRM.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 Asia Pulse - Competition in the Chinese e-commerce market is intensifying, as two major players, eBay Eachnet under the US giant eBay and the largest Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba, pump resources and effort into building secure online payment systems.

"This year will be critical for the development of e-commerce and online payment," said Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba and Taobao, Alibaba's subsidiary online auction website.

He said yesterday at a press conference that his company will use the experience of Taobao's online payment tool AliPay for the business-to-business e-commerce website Alibaba.

With Alipay, buyers can deposit money into a bank account designated by Alibaba and Taobao. Sellers only receive payment when the deal is verified by buyers.

Alibaba and Taobao have partnered with four major Chinese banks to guarantee the security of the system and ease traders' worries.

The Hangzhou-based e-commerce company has also promised to refund all losses, if traders use Alipay in the transactions.

According to Ma, 70 per cent of transactions made on Taobao.com have used Alipay since the website introduced the service in 2003.

He expected total registered users of Alibaba and Taobao to reach 30 million this year from 11 million at the end of 2004.

EBay Eachnet, in fierce competition with Taobao, also announced yesterday that it would spend more than 100 million yuan (US$12 million) this year to launch a new online payment system.

The US auction giant said last month that it would invest US$100 million in eBay Eachnet this year with the 100 million yuan (US$12 million) part of that commitment.

James Zheng, chief operating officer of eBay Eachnet, said his firm will launch a new online payment tool in the first quarter, combining the situation of China's e-commerce market with the technical expertise of eBay's US arm.

EBay Eachnet launched a payment system called Escrow in October, similar to AliPay, to create a more secure online payment environment for traders.

The online auction firm also opened a China Service Centre, serving customers in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Zheng said the centre will increase staff numbers this year from 150 to 400. EBay Eachnet's registered users topped 10 million on January 13.

Henry Yang, president of Shanghai iResearch Co Ltd, a professional Internet industry consultancy, said trading security was still a major obstacle in China, so the industry still needs to strive to ease people's e-commerce concerns.

According to iResearch, the total trading volume of e-commerce in China will grow from 440 billion yuan (US$53.14 billion) in 2004 to 620 billion yuan (US$74.88 billion) this year.

Devils really earn their due; N.J. dethrones Dallas on Arnott goal in 2nd OT.

Byline: K.C. Johnson

DALLAS_Finally, the mask came off.

Late Saturday night, after Jason Arnott scored the most dramatic goal in New Jersey franchise history, the sticks and gloves went flying and the Devils began wildly and euphorically celebrating on the Reunion Arena ice.

Martin Brodeur skated to the center of it all, maskless.

That the goaltender wore nothing on his face but a broad smile seemed symbolic, given that he and his Devils teammates finally shed their anonymity with a pulsating, 2-1 victory over Dallas that ended at 8 minutes 20 seconds of the second overtime.

New Jersey, which captured its second Stanley Cup title in six seasons, may be the most nondescript, 100-point and championship team in history.

Sure, some of the Devils carried reputations into this series. Brodeur is a decorated All-Star goalie. Defenseman Scott Stevens, who captured the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff's most valuable player, is a known force. And Claude Lemieux is a quintessential playoff performer.

But who the heck are the rest of these guys?

In a word, champions, thanks to Arnott's game-winner, Brodeur's sparkling 30-save effort and a multitude of will. New Jersey ended the Stars' reign as champions and tied its own NHL record with its 10th road victory in one postseason. The Devils won all three games played at Reunion Arena.

"I'm a little too tired to feel anything," Stevens said. "But this is a dream come true."

Just ask Brett Hull how Arnott is feeling. The man who ended last year's finals in the third overtime of Game 6 could only watch this year as Arnott did the same in one less overtime period.

Patrik Elias backhanded a pass from the corner past Sylvain Cote and through the crease. Arnott one-timed the puck past a sprawling Ed Belfour, who proved spectacular in defeat with 43 saves.

Arnott had been forced to sweat out a rare overtime penalty when he foolishly cross-checked Blake Sloan's head to the ice at 18:43 of the first extra period. The Stars were unable to convert the power play, and the Devils ended up outshooting them 11-1 in the first overtime.

"Belfour kept us in the game," Stars center Mike Modano said.

Brodeur proved equally as impenetrable. He stopped a point-blank Hull blast at 4:43 of the second overtime.

Arnott's physicality served as a microcosm of a brutal game. The most serious injury came when Stars defenseman Derian Hatcher separated Petr Sykora from his senses with a questionable hit at 12:08 of the first.

The Devils' forward smacked his head on the ice when he fell. Players from both teams gathered around as Sykora, his head immobilized, left the ice on a stretcher and went directly to nearby Baylor Medical Center. A CAT scan proved normal, but Sykora was kept overnight for observation.

Scott Niedermayer broke a scoreless tie with a shorthanded goal at 5:18 of the second. The goal broke a scoreless string of 145:31 for New Jersey and had the potential to demoralize Dallas.

But Mike Keane countered with a huge goal just 69 seconds later, beating Brodeur with a quick wrist shot from the right circle off assists from Scott Thornton and Modano.

Coming on the heels of a three-overtime classic in Game 5, the teams played a combined 194:41 of hockey.

"These were two unbelievable hockey games," Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock said.

And when it ended, there all the unsung Devils were, skating around with expressions of ecstasy on their faces.

There was the center Arnott, who battled injuries and found redemption in New Jersey after disappointing seasons in Edmonton.

There was Arnott's linemate, Elias, who answered questions about whether he was tough enough to endure the playoff grind.

There were the four rookies_Scott Gomez, Colin White, John Madden and Brian Rafalski_who contributed so much with so little playoff experience.

There were defensemen Scott Niedermayer and Ken Daneyko, rocks of stability who also hoisted Lord Stanley's trophy with the Devils in 1995.

Even Sykora received representation as Devils coach Larry Robinson wore the injured forward's sweater during the on-ice celebration.

"This one is special," said Robinson, who has won six Stanley Cups as a player, one as an assistant and now one as a head coach.

So, who are these guys? They're the Stanley Cup champions.
