Bush: Allied Forces Prevailed in Iraq

ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (AP) _ President Bush, aboard an aircraft carrier homebound from war, said Thursday night "the United States and our allies have prevailed" against Saddam Hussein's Iraq and will confront any other threatening nation suspected of terrorist ties. "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended," Bush said from the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which launched thousands of airstrikes on Iraq. "The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on Sept. 11, 2001, and still goes on."

Pakistan Questions Six al-Qaida Suspects

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) _ Pakistani officials interrogating a suspected al-Qaida commander wanted in the Sept. 11 attacks and the bombing of the USS Cole expect that more suspects will be tracked down soon. "We are optimistic about the arrest of more terrorists," Col. Mohammed Akhtar of Pakistan's paramilitary Rangers force said Thursday. "Initial investigations indicate that these men were plotting terrorist attacks."

N. Korea Urges Workers to Be Combat-Ready

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ North Korea marked May Day on Thursday by urging its workers to prepare for war with the United States, while South Korea's president said he will visit Washington to seek a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis. At a rally in Pyongyang, communist labor leader Ryom Sun Gil called for workers to form regiments and divisions " ... so that they may be fully ready to defend the country from the enemy's invasion," said the North's official news agency, KCNA.

Democrats Blocking Second Bush Judge Pick

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Senate Republicans suffered a second loss Thursday in their push to confirm a contested judicial nominee when Democrats blocked a Texas Supreme Court justice picked by President Bush for a federal appeals court. Democrats already have thwarted majority Republicans by stalling the nomination of Hispanic lawyer Miguel Estrada and now are also delaying a vote on Priscilla Owen.

Turkey Rescuers Search for Students

CELTIKSUYU, Turkey (AP) _ Listening for small voices, rescuers early Friday searched for dozens of children buried in the rubble of their dormitory after an earthquake struck southeastern Turkey. At least 100 people were killed and 1,000 injured. Search teams working all day Thursday and into the early hours Friday were in contact with four of the children, state-owned TRT television reported from the scene. But there was little sign of 80 other children trapped in the collapsed four-story building.

Powell: Don't Derail Mideast 'Road Map'

MADRID (AP) _ Secretary of State Colin Powell warned Israel and the Palestinian Authority on Thursday against letting violence "immediately contaminate the road map" toward peace that President Bush has offered. Opening a three-day trip built around Middle East peace efforts, Powell said much work remains before Bush's goal of a Palestinian state by 2005 can be met. That work includes ending suicide bomb attacks and harsh defensive actions by Israel, he said.

Dixie Chicks Begin Tour in S.C. Concert

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ The Dixie Chicks let the music speak for themselves _ at least for the first 10 minutes of their first concert. "We have a plan for this," lead singer Natalie Maines said after the band's first set Thursday night. "If you're here to boo, we welcome that. We're going to give you 15 seconds to do that."

Salt Lake Editor Resigns Amid Smart Flap

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ The editor of The Salt Lake Tribune resigned Thursday, two days after two of the paper's reporters were dismissed for lying about selling information to a supermarket tabloid in the Elizabeth Smart case. Tribune publisher Dean Singleton, also head of the newspaper's owner, MediaNews Group, announced the resignation after meeting with the newspaper's staff Thursday afternoon.

Air Force Academy Probes Online Sex Site

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) _ Still recovering from a sexual assault scandal, the Air Force Academy said Thursday it is investigating to determine whether a cadet organized group sex sessions through the Internet. Brig. Gen. Johnny Weida, the commandant in charge of cadets, declined to name the cadet or detail possible charges.

Celtics Advance With Win Over Pacers

BOSTON (AP) _ The Boston Celtics are moving on in the playoffs for the second straight year, while the Indiana Pacers couldn't make it out of the first round for the third consecutive season. Paul Pierce had 27 points and eight rebounds and Antoine Walker scored 21 Thursday night as the Celtics took a 23-point first-half lead and coasted to a 110-90 victory over the Pacers in Game 6.
