Fed: Labot govt would fix Wik Melham

A federal Labor government would fix racist elements of the Wik amendments to the Native
Title Act.

Opposition Aboriginal affairs spokesman DARYL MELHAM has told the Nine Network the
act needs to be fixed up.

But he wouldn't commit Labor to repealing contentious elements of the 1998 amendments
which extinguished native title on leased land.

He says he agrees with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice commissioner
WILLIAM JONAS'S assessment that the amendments were racist.

Mr MELHAM says a Labor government would sit down with all the stakeholders and take
advice on the amendments.
