NSW: Six escape inner west fire after windows explode
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - Six people escaped a fire at a unit in Sydney's inner-west this
morning when the sound of exploding windows woke them.
The NSW Fire Service said the second-level apartment at Ashfield was consumed by fire about
1am and the block of eight units was evacuated.
Five of the people in the unit at Dengate Avenue, including a nine-year-old girl and a
six-year-old boy, were taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.
A 32-year-old man suffered burns to his hands and feet while trying to put out the blaze.
He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Police said three adults and two children had visited the unit, occupied by a 29-year-old
man, for a dinner party.
They were awoken shortly after 1am by the smell of smoke and the sound of windows blowing
out.
The Fire Service said the fire was not suspicious and had been caused by candles in the
lounge room.
The unit was severely damaged and some of the other apartments sustained slight smoke and
heat damage.
