QLD: Travelsafe committee to investigate rural road safety
BRISBANE, April 1 AAP - Rural road safety will come under the spotlight during a Queensland
Parliamentary Travelsafe Committee inquiry announced today.
Committee chair Nita Cunningham said the inquiry would investigate how successful the Rural
Road Safety Action Plan, adopted nationally in 1996, had been.
Mrs Cunningham said 188 of the 360 Queensland road fatalities in 1997 had been on rural
roads.
"Although there have been drops in the road toll generally, the decreases in rural areas
have been significantly less than in urban areas," she said.
The committee has released an issues paper.
Written submissions should be sent to the Travelsafe Committee at Parliament House,
Brisbane, by May 28.
